The Flume Creek Trail rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Pend Oreille Valley & Selkirk Mountains
Description: This is a popular and scenic hike, located within the Abercrombie-Hooknose Roadless Area. The trail traverses Alpine meadow and sub-alpine habitat. From the summit of Abercrombie Mountain, hikers will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Pend Oreille Valley, Selkirk Mountains and surrounding mountain peaks. A variety of wildlife may be spotted in this area, including common whitetail deer, endangered woodland caribou and threatened grizzly bear. Other species of interest are bighorn sheep, moose, elk, mountain lion, black bear, gray wolf, bald eagle and other bird species.
The intrepid hiker looking for a challenge may choose to tackle the cross country hike across the ridge line to Hooknose Mountain.
Abercrombie Mt is accessible from two other trails, Abercrombie #117 and Silver Creek #119. Flume Creek is the closest to pavement. The actual peak is another 200 feet higher than the top of the trail at 7308 ft. making it the second highest in Eastern Washington and only 6 ft below Gypsy Peak to the north.
The access road is very rocky and not recommended for passenger cars or horse trailers. Remember to Pack it In, Pack it Out. Be sure and plan for variable weather due to the elevation.
