Description: The Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge- Mill Butte Trail rises 410 feet from the Headquarters parking lot along a 4.5 loop trail. A good portion of the trail is on old road and rail beds, making for an easy hike. A creek and plenty of wildlife make this trail a great choice for a family adventure. The peak can be accessed via a short spur at the top of the trail. It offers a panoramic view over Starvation Flat to the Calispel Peak. The trail wanders through open pine meadows and along the creek.

  1. We had a lovely hike here on Labor Day. It had rained the day prior, so the air smelled wonderful. The Mill Butte Trail is well-maintained and a pretty easy climb up to the Butte itself. The 4.5 mile loop took us about an hour and forty five minutes. Afterward we drove the 10 mile ‘auto-route’, you just look for the pileated woodpecker signs to let you know when there is a scenic pull-out or an informative stop. Interpretive signs are also found along the way. We’ll be back!

  2. A very fun hike. Took my wife and parents on this hike for the first hike of 2016. Trail is very well marked and paths are easy to follow. Took around 2 hours and wasn’t to steep for the first hike of the year. We will be back to this one for sure. Always good to have such a great place to hike.
